Speak of the devil! Jan 23rd

Without further adue....Kim's post for today:

Hello! I'm so sorry I've been away for so many days, but my family cameto visit me from last Wednesday than to this past Tuesday and I didn'tblog at all. I was also somewhat "bad" while they were here. Let'sface it...I'm in NYC with my husband and son...I wasn't going to stickto cold broccoli and chicken strips every day. I wasn't horrible thoughand while I didn't lose more than .4 lbs in the 5 days, I didn't gainanything at all.

I kept to my protein shakes and low calorie meals for breakfast/lunchduring the weekdays and then went to dinner with them on the weeknights. While by "normal" standards, I was eating very low calorie meals, the meals may have contained items like nuts or cheese (small amounts).

On Saturday (the day I chose to cheat because I got the day off to spendwith them in the city) I had the following (AND IT WAS GLORIOUS!!)
Breakfast: 1 fried egg, 2 spoonfuls of potatoes and 1 piece oftoast (with butter *gasp*!)
Lunch: 2 mini "Pop" burgers with cheese and 2 onion rings (another*gasp*)
Dinner: 3 goat cheese sliders and salad (no fries)

The next day I did not gain anything, but I did not lose either. It messed with my head a bit, but my wonderful husband kept telling me that I could get right back on the diet after they left. I don't regret 1 minute of it.

I had been on the 500 calories a day for 2 weeks and that food was SO good!!! So, they left Tuesday and I'm back on the 500 calories. My system completely jolted itself and between yesterday and today I've lost 3 pounds. Altogether, I've lost 15 lbs.

We've even been doing test meals here at the hotel and I've been eating only fish (salmon, blackened seabass and tuna tartar) and salad and it's been delicious. I'm actuallyenjoying the diet now. I feel great, people are starting to notice and life is good.

Just an update

Jeff's comments:

Just a quick update....Kim is still doing very well (loss of 15 lbs in just over 3 weeks). There have been no posts, because Jackson (our 2 1/2 yr old handsome devil) and I were in NJ visiting with Kim all week. This has been her first major test. It's easy to have all your little bagged meals of meat and veggies, all portioned out, and stick to it, but when your husband and munching-machine of a son are visiting you eating 3 meals a day in restaurants, well that is when the trouble starts.

I have to give Kim credit, tho....extremely little cheating went on. Fortunately, she was still working 5 of the 7 days we were there, so while it meant not being able to spend as much time with her, it also meant breakfast and lunch were just me and mini-me out not drooling over yummy food in front of her.

And the meals we did all eat together, Kim did great, always choosing the least of the evils from the menus...salads, fish, no sauces, no carbs, etc. So hats off to my better half for trudging through a week of hearing about her husbands Caribbean Crepes and son's M&M Pancakes for breakfast....or burgers with Applewood smoked bacon for lunch....and still keeping to her diet.

Kudos to my sweets!!

Anyway, she's back on track now that we're back in Phoenix, and the diet continues unabated. Hopefully we'll be back with regular daily updates tomorrow.

Kim's notes:

Sorry I’ve been away for a couple of days but I’m going crazy here at my project site. We’re working close to 15 hours a day and I’m EXHAUSTED. My husband and son are coming to visit me tomorrow and I couldn’t be more excited. They will definitely give me the boost I need to make it through the opening.

Ok, so down to business. As of yesterday, I was down 9.6 lbs. Today…I’m still at 9.6 lbs lost…not a good feeling when I’ve been losing every day. BUT…I won’t let it discourage me. I knew it was impossible to continue to lose that much per day and I seemed to have hit that small plateau. I’m sure there will be many more.

There could be many reasons why I didn’t lose yesterday. I drank about a gazillion gallons of water yesterday, that’s one. I haven’t (sorry to be gross) gone #2 in 2 days (that will definitely keep the weight on) and I ate salmon at a restaurant last night. I’ve found that the past two restaurant meals I’ve had showed less lost on the scale the next day. I’m sure it’s portion size as what I ate had hardly any calories whatsoever.

The cravings at night have gotten a little bad, only because we don’t have TV’s in our rooms yet and I’m boredJ But, I have my laptop and my work and only 2 more days until we have TV so I’ll be fine.

I’m still feeling great, getting lots of exercise and all of that. I’m still excited that I’ve lost 9.6 pounds in 7 days. That’s pretty awesome. I can’t wait to see my family.

Kim's notes:

So, last night was a huge test. My team wanted to go out to dinner in Hoboken (great place if you’ve never been there!) and I couldn’t really say no. I had a Bok Choy/Cabbage salad with grilled chicken and sesame vinaigrette. I also had (gasp) two small sips of red wine. Of course, after I sipped the wine I immediately regretted it, but whatever. It is what it is. The salad was delicious…it was so nice to have hot food (the chicken was grilled) for the first time in 5 days. I was very satisfied. The portion was small, as the restaurant was a fine-dining establishment, so I didn’t leave feeling horrible over what I ate. I know all of the blogs and message boards see dining out during the first 21 days a huge “sin”, but frankly, my lifestyle and job makes this impossible. I am opening a hotel, living in an UNOPENED hotel for a month with nothing but a mini-fridge. While I can (and will) get by with cold meats and veggies, my job is one where I will be expected to dine out with co-workers once in a while. Needless to say, there was no need for the third protein shake last night…I went to bed satisfied and full.

This morning, the scale reported that I’m down 7.6 lbs. Apparently, the restaurant food did not slow down or stop the process. I guess the responsible thing to say at this point is that my experience is probably unique because I am getting A LOT of exercise right now. I probably climb, on average, about 10 floors per day at least twice per day (sometimes more). This combined with the constant running around the property, lifting heavy equipment, you name it…makes for some serious calorie burning activity. I’m attributing the excess loss of weight (more than 1lb a day) in spite of the restaurant meal, the wine sips and the occasional dreaded pretzel, to all of my activity.

Of course, my co-workers think I’m a crazy person. They all survive on multiple cups of Starbucks and very yummy looking meals as I used to. Being in the upscale hospitality industry turns you into somewhat of a “foodie” and mentally, it has been a little rough being in NYC and not being able to indulge in all of the deliciousness around me. I know it’s for the best though…and that salad last night was a real treat.

Now that I have officially completed a week, I can say that it can only get easier from here. My headaches are gone, the lethargic feelings are gone, I’m getting a lot more sleep and I’m full of energy. I don’t have anything bad to say about the diet, other than mentally, when I’m not running around (like right now), my mind starts to wander into the dangerous “I want to eat” zone. That’s MY problem, though, not the diet’s. I don’t even think I’m “hungry”…I think that I’m just so used to eating bad foods when I’m stressed that my mind is having a hard time with it. I’m a firm believe that most who are overweight have more of a mental problem than a physical one. We’re fat because we eat too much- plain and simple.

Friday, 1/9/09

I’m down 7.4 lbs as of this morning. So, I can officially say that the lb per day that the doctors claim during the first 21 days is definitely working so far. I talked to my doctor yesterday and she said that I shouldn’t count the loading days. So that means that in 4.5 days I’ve lost 7.4 lbs. I had to take the shot again this morning and I’m hoping that it helps my hunger. Yesterday was a little rough. I was really hungry by about 3 p.m. so I did a protein shake. I had broccoli, chicken and watermelon for dinner. The watermelon was the most delicious thing I’d ever eaten in my life…you would have thought I had 4 cheeseburgers in front of me.

The headaches are gone, thank GOD. I think it was the cold turkey stopping of Diet Coke. I’m good now though. My paperwork says I can have 1 diet coke per day, but I’m just going to try and do none. I might treat myself and have one over the weekend. I ended up not eating the hot meal last night because I’m terrified of restaurant food. I just don’t know what they cook their stuff in. Again, maybe I’ll treat myself to something hot over the weekend. I don’t know though.

I’m finding that I’m sleeping much better too. I used to wake up feeling horrible…now I’m waking up on time and not so groggy. I’m also not waking up every hour during the night.

My two cents:

The sleeping situation makes me very very happy. Kim's had a lot of sleep issues recently, not being able to fall asleep, tossing and turning, not waking up easily, etc., so that's music to my ears. I also think that her snoring will all but dissapear once she loses some weight.

And the no diet coke is great, I'm so glad she's off that crap.

Thursday 1/8/09

Kim's notes from Wednesday:

"I haven’t had any headaches since Tuesday, so I think I’m finally past that. I stressed and stressed about the pretzel rod (or half of a pretzel rod) yesterday and when I got back to my room and re-read the foods I could eat I saw that it allows for (2) breadsticks a day…WOO HOO! That will help me because I’m having salt cravings like crazy. It also said I could salt and season any of my foods, so we’re ok there. I need to find a way to fight the hunger pangs at night. They drive me crazy. Maybe I’ll save my bread sticks for then…I don’t know.

I didn’t have to take a shot today, so that was pretty cool.

My hair is awesome. I’m getting all kinds of compliments on how shiny and thick it is. It’s even better than when I was pregnant with Jackson. I’m peeing every 10 minutes, just like when I was pregnant. Don’t know whether that’s the water, the HCG or both…doesn’t matter. I like for things to leave my body.

So here’s the BIG NEWS…I found a scale and weighed myself. Today is Day 6 and I’m down…are you ready? 6.5lbs!!!!!!!! Can you believe that????? I weighed myself four times to be sure…AND I’m wearing clothes!!!! Pretty cool stuff. "

My two cents:

Kim has never allowed me to see her on a scale or give me her starting weight, so all I'll be able to do is tell you what she's lost when she weighs herself. And the doc office has told her she shouldn't ever step on a scale, but I don't know how you keep a woman from doing that, when she's on a diet like this one.

Still, pretty impressive - almost 7 pounds and the first week isnt' even over yet. I would imagine that 500 calories a day will have that effect, but lets' see how it continues. I'm not sure where the plateau will be - Kim is by no means "obese" and I know that this diet is geared more towards people who are very overweight - but it will be interesting to see the progression.

Also, it's cool about the hair. Kim has incredible hair which is naturally curly but she straightens it a lot, so it doesn't always have the same fullness when she straightens it as when it's curly. Although she's out of town for work, my son and I will be going to visit her next wednesday for a week, so it will be fun to see if I notice a difference in the hair and face.

Tuesday 1/6/09

Kim's notes from Tuesday 1/09:

"Today I woke up feeling really refreshed. Last night was rough…I don’t mind telling you. I couldn’t sleep because I was so hungry. I think the reason is because I did not do the third protein shake. I was doing my food diary on fitday.com and when it told me how many calories were in the protein shake (130!!), the third pushed me over the 500 calories for the day, so I made the decision to cancel out that third shake at night. My body will get used to it, but last night sucked. I even opened the bag of lobster meat and snagged a piece because I was so hungry and then felt so guilty about it the rest of the night.

But today, I feel really good. I know you’re not going to believe this (I can hardly believe it myself) but I’m wearing the same jeans I wore on Monday and today they’re looser on me??!! I know the message boards all say that in the first week you lose a crazy amount of weight (some people lose 10-15 lbs), but I didn’t believe it. Maybe the diet combined with all of my running up and down stairs is doubling the effect on me.

The headaches were almost unbearable yesterday and last night, but so far today, I don’t have one. I’ve got my aspirin just in case."

My two cents:

I guess I really didn't think she would feel good this fast. Making this kind of drastic diet change I thought would make her irritable and feel pretty lousy, but it seems to be coming around pretty quickly. Looks like the caffeine headaches are already wearing off, too.

We've read that the weight loss in the first few weeks is pretty drastic, and it looks like it's already starting.

I know that the negative people will say "Well, of course!!! You're only eating 500 calories a day!! Of course you're going to lose weight!! You don't need HCG for that!" But that's not what the HCG shots do, or are for. The primary reason for the shots, at least for Kim, is to:
a) Help decrease the hunger pangs - which for her are the hardest part
b) Help increase the metabolism and give her energy
c) Help somewhat with pulling out the stored fats (whether this is actually what HCG does or not, we've heard both sides of the coin) But it's the least of the advantages that she desires from the shots.

Another bit about Kim....she's the type that when she gets started on something, like this program, she dives in full boat. She can be very driven, and will finish what she started, passionately. It's the same way she handles work, and her personal life. All she needs is the kick-start, and she's off and running. So, I guarantee she'll stick with this to the end.

Getting Started - Monday 1/5/09

Here are monday's email notes:

"Ok, so yesterday I ate 1 oz chicken, 1 cup of raw broccoli and 4 small slices of apple for lunch and 1 oz lobster meat, 1 cup raw spinach and 3 strawberries for dinner. During the day I had (3) protein shakes. I was very tired and withdrawn all day and went to sleep at 7:30.

Today, I woke up feeling a little groggy, but after my shower I felt great. This morning I’ve had a protein shake and a bottle of water and I feel great (except for the headache which seems to be here to stay). I’m energized and not at all hungry. For lunch I’m having 1 oz chicken, 4 celery sticks and 4 apple slices. I think I just had to get through my first day without caffeine. "

And my two cents:

We're pretty sure the headaches are from the lack of caffeine. Kim was a hardcore Diet Coke drinker, and the total lack of caffeine after drinking so much of it, is most likely the culprit. As of Wednesday morning, they've already subsided a little.

Instead of ordering room service and fast food, Kim is now just going to the local grocery and getting the foods she needs. She also drinks a strawberry/banana protein shake purchased at the HCG diet office, which she says are actually pretty tasty. She's sticking to the 500 calorie diet in addition to the shots and shakes.

Eating vegetables and chicken/shrimp/lobster instead of basically crap for her meals is obviously going to change her health and disposition in such a positive way, in addition to the weight loss, so we're off to a great start.

A Little Background Info

Okay, to start with, I was very skeptical about the HCG program. I did a lot of research online trying to figure out exactly what it is, and how it works. On the message boards I read, with people on the diet, most had had fantastic results, and of course, the naysayers were telling how it did nothing; didn't burn fat; had side effects; yadda yadda yadda. Of course all these people with nothing but negative facts were people who had never used it.

Still, I was more worried about it than Kim, and I was leaning towards the "Don't do it" side. However, what sold me, was when she went to the office where they administer the diet and shots, a woman there had actually worked for Kim's OB/Gyn, whom we both absolutely love and trust implicitly. They got Kim's Doc on the phone, and he supported it whole heartedly. Now, this doctor is one of the best and most highly regarded ob/gyns in the city of Phoenix, so if it's okay with him, it's okay by me.

She just started the diet on Sunday, and what follows are her emails to me (she's out of town for an extended work project) and my comments.

Intro and How-do-you-do

Greetings, and thanks for stopping by. This blog will detail my wife's experiences while going through the HCG diet. Most of the posts will be verbatim what she tells and emails me, and once in a while, I'll try and give you the husband's perspective on the whole shebang.

I hope this information is helpful to you, when deciding if this is the right diet/program for you, and please feel free to post or ask questions anytime, and I'll answer them as quickly and as honestly as possible.

This was not a decision taken lightly, and I certainly don't think this diet is for everyone, please - as we did - consult a doctor you respect and trust before doing this or any other serious diet program.

A quick bit of info about Kim's situation - she works long days and travels. A LOT. She is in the hotel business, so she spends extended travel time at various locations around N. America, and because of this, it's very hard to have any kind of routine eating habits. She has to live primarily on room service and whatever happens to be near the hotel she's working on. And because of the long days, it's very hard to find a time and place to exercise (these hotels are not finished when she's working on them), especially after a 12-16 hour day running around. And lots of that running is up and down flights of stairs. (I guess it's kind of a built-in exercise routine)

That, and her type of personality, made her a good candidate for the HCG diet.
